Take a look at our Zero Carbon Homes Development

Our ground-breaking research project named 'Greenwatt Way' has been built in Slough, Berkshire. We have worked with a team of partners to build 10 'Zero Carbon Homes' which are being lived in by SSE employees, Slough Borough Council staff and local families.

The development, a mixture of two and three bedroom family homes and one bedroom flats, features rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, triple glazed windows, enhanced insulation and complies with 'Code 6' of the Code for Sustainable Homes - the highest possible standard.

Our homes receive their electrical power from solar PV tiles which cover the entire roof, and heating and hot water is supplied from an innovative low temperature, low heat loss, district heating system that is powered by four different renewable sources:

  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Solar thermal technology
  • A biomass boiler

Over the next two years, we will study this highly energy efficient community, to better understand customer's needs as the UK moves to reduce its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. The project will help us determine the changes in energy generation and consumption that are required for a low carbon society to become a reality.
